According to Denis Sukhodolsky, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist at Yale Medicine Child Study Center, it’s not uncommon for a child younger than 4 to experience as many as nine tantrums each week, with episodes of weeping, kicking, stomping, slapping, and shoving lasting five to ten minutes. By kindergarten, the majority of youngsters have outgrown this behavior.

Professional support may be required for children whose tantrums persist as they grow older and become something that is not developmentally appropriate, causing issues with friends, family, or at school. Anger issues are the most common cause for children being referred for mental health therapy, according to Sukhodolsky.
